MSI Afterburner for AMD GPU

Despite the MSI branding, Afterburner works on AMD Radeon cards from any manufacturer. Here's how AMD tuning works and where it differs from Nvidia.

Yes — MSI Afterburner works with AMD Radeon GPUs, not just Nvidia and not just MSI-branded cards. It supports a broad range of Radeon models (roughly HD 3000-series and newer) from Sapphire, PowerColor, ASRock, XFX, Gigabyte and others.

Setting it up for a Radeon card

The install is identical to any other card: download from an official source, keep RTSS checked for the overlay, and launch. Afterburner detects your Radeon GPU and shows its clocks, temperature and usage automatically.

Overclocking & undervolting on AMD

The core workflow matches our overclocking guide: raise the power limit for headroom, then nudge core and memory clocks in small steps and stress-test. A few AMD-specific notes:

  • Undervolting is especially rewarding on Radeon. Many AMD cards run cooler and quieter — sometimes faster — with a modest undervolt, using the Voltage/Frequency Curve Editor.
  • Memory tuning has error correction. Push memory too far and you'll see performance quietly drop instead of a crash, so watch benchmark scores, not just stability.
  • Some controls may be limited. Depending on the card and driver, certain voltage or clock ranges can be restricted at the hardware level.

Afterburner vs AMD's own software

AMD's driver includes its own tuning (Radeon Software / Adrenalin). Afterburner is still popular with Radeon owners because of its consistent interface across GPU brands, its flexible on-screen overlay via RTSS, and its custom fan curves. Many people run Afterburner purely for the overlay and fan control while tuning in the driver — or vice versa. Avoid applying the same overclock in both tools at once to prevent conflicts.

Good to know

Fan control, the FPS counter, hardware monitoring and Predator recording all work the same on AMD as on Nvidia. If a brand-new Radeon isn't fully detected, grab the latest beta build.
